Where was God on Tuesday 9-11-01?
My son is only 3 years old, and his world changed forever on Tuesday September 11th as he watched television from the comfort of his parent's bed. He
doesn't know what happened in the world that has the rest of us so frightened. The
cartoon network generally doesn't break into Scooby-Do to announce that terrorists managed to hijack 4 airliners and alter the life of every citizen in the world. But just about the time of the dedication of the
new World Trade Center in 5 years, I will tell him what happened on that dark day. And I want to be able to answer a question that his burgeoning child-like faith will ask; Where was God on that Tuesday Morning?
Having watched the coverage for the last 6 days I think I will start by telling him that God was in the hearts of all the firefighters, police
and volunteers that raced to help the victims. They put themselves in harms way to save those who could not.
I will tell him that God was in the souls of the frightened people on those planes and in the buildings. In the case
of the last plane headed for Washington, He gave them strength to overcome their fear, the wisdom to see the terrorists plan, and the courage to change the outcome.
I will tell him that the hand of God guided the collapse of two 110-story buildings to come down in a way demolition experts could not have performed, thus limiting an already enormous tragedy. I have no doubt
that those buildings could have collapsed in such a way that the overall death tolls could have been in the hundreds of thousands when the destruction ended.
And finally I will tell him that those that died will be remembered for bringing an increasingly violent and
godless world together. In the aftermath of this tragedy, we all remembered what was important in life. We took the time to help one another. We began to live the values of community and family. We took the time to
help a neighbor, visit the sick and feed whoever was hungry. We began to realize that there was more to life than the golden calf of the twenty-first century, wealth.
So for now, I will hold him as tight as I can. I will protect him from danger and teach
him about God and spirituality. I will shower him with love and do my part to live the lessons that are screaming to be learned from this life-changing event. Then I
will be ready when he asks me where God was on that Tuesday morning.
